Summary Report

Second chapter of National Biomedical Research Competition (NBRCOM-2019) was organised by Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research, Chandigarh under the Aegis of Society of Young Biomedical Scientists on 17 November, 2019 to commemorate the 88-birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. The young researchers from different fields of Biomedical Science namely Medical Science, Life science, Pharmacy, Nursing and AYUSH were congregate under a single umbrella from across the country. Competition" in Oral & Poster Sessions was judged by eminent biomedical researchers and faculty from IIT's, NIPER, NIT's, Panjab University, Chandigarh, Punjab University, Patiala, AIIMS, PGI etc.

The theme of the conference was "Biomedical Research: an insight into young researcher's scientific work". Young researcher awards were instituted for winners of each category. It was followed by awards and prize distribution to research scholars in various categories including; Life Science, Medical Sciences, AYUSH and Innovative Ideas & Patents. The cash prizes of Rs 25000, Rs 15000, Rs 10000 and other amounts were awarded to winners in each category. Total 650 researchers Participated in this scientific competition and among them 400 presented their scientific research in different categories. The one -day research competition was enriched with various scientific presentations that extensively covered current topics of biomedical sciences.

Chief Guest of the ceremony was Prof Jai Rup Singh Ex-Vice Chancellor, Guru Nanak Dev University and CUP, Punjab. Prof Singh stressed that modern research should be integrated and multidisciplinary, more and more innovative ideas and thoughts needs to be given a chance so that science can communicate easily with the society .He also commended the organisers for attracting a large number of participants in the competition, so that more and more creative ideas can be plotted on the scientific rainbow.

Patron, Prof Jagat Ram said that Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research, Chandigarh is progressing in direction of their original goals which were envisioned during establishment under the Govt scheme then lead by the former Prime Minister Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru. He also quoted that world is moving fast forward in healthcare field and it is very important for initiatives like this in our country, so that we would keep pace and contribute towards global development under a scientific community.

Scientific Chairperson of NBRCom-2019, Dr. Samir Malhotra, (HOD, Pharmacology),while welcoming the delegates and dignitaries, presented an overview of Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research, Chandigarh as a institute of medical education as well research organisation. Prof Samir said that meaningful research work needs nurturing, collaboration, cross- talk across disciplines and multidisciplinary inputs if there are genuine intentions to extend the frontiers of medicine. Prof Samir added that Chandigarh is developing fast as a rapid healthcare sector & we have to move hand in hand with them to work for the benefit of the social wellbeing . Scientific research and spirituality both endeavour to search for the ultimate truth about life and universe and the meeting of the two leads to a blissful experience.

Convener of NBRCom- 2019, Dr. Arun K Baranwal, Dr. Puneet Dhamija (AIIMS, Rishikesh) proposed vote of thanks and gave a massage to the researchers to promote more translational research and create competitive workforce as per global standard.

Organizing Secretary, Rohitash Yadav worked tirelessly for months to make this program successful. Yadav believes that when there is sincerity of purpose, good intentions and strong commitment then it is not difficult to overcome uphill tasks and achieve the motto of success. The day the Young Indian Scientists bring laurels to the country, the Society will have succeeded in its mission. He sought the support of the youths to make this, success of the scientific journey of society which he has visioned long back. Society will run on the ideals of the scientists like Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and will develop a research environment in the country, which will boost young minds to come up with new ideas and help the country prosper and excel in the field of Science & Technology.

Swathi Lakshmi of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT),Madras bagged the 1 position in Young Researcher award for her work, Design and Development of Micro-Computed Tomography Imaging system for Pre-clinical Studies . Similarly, the second position was secured by Mr. Sunil Kumar from Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI), Lucknow for his work, the malarial Stearoyl-CoA desaturase is essential for late liver stage development: Implications for GAP vaccine development. Mr. Ravi Jain PhD. Scholar from Shiv Nadar University, U.P. secured the third rank for his innovative work on, Plant-Like Calcium Dependent Protein Kinase of Plasmodium falciparum, PfCDPK1: Targeting its functional activity and interaction with conserved Pf14-3-3 protein, in the oral presentation life sciences category. Award of Appreciation was given to Mr. Soheb Anwar Mohammad, Ms. Nisha Sharma & thirdly, Ms. Kirti Sharma, Ms. Malabika Chakrabarti, Mr. Bhupesh Vaidya, Mr. Suman Saha, Mr. Raj Kumar Sah, in the oral presentation life sciences category. Young Researcher award for Poster Presentation Life Sciences category was awarded to Mr. Naushad Akhtar from IMTech Chandigarh for his work on, RunX: A key regulator of anti-leishmanial immunity, Ms. Pallapati Anusha Rani, NIPER, Mohali secured second place for her work, Effect of Glycerol 3-Phosphate Dehydrogenase 1 (GPD1) on the Cellular Stress Response Pathway, Ms. Sobiya Zafar secured third place in this category for Enhanced Antitumor efficacy with Docetaxel and Thymoquinone co-encapsulated pegylated lipid nanocapsules for breast cancer treatment from Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi. Award of Appreciation in the same category was being awarded to Dr. Md. Jahangir Alam, Ms. Baby Sharma, Mr. Diwakar Sharma, Mr. Dixit Sharma, Ms. Harshita Sharma, Mr. Kaushik Kuche, Ms. Monika Saini, Mr. Yatharth Malik.

In the Medical Sciences Category, Mr. Rohan Rajendra Ghadi of NIPER,Mohali won 1 position as young researcher award for his work on, Exploring an interesting dual functionality of anacardic acid for efficient paclitaxel delivery in breast cancer therapy, Ms. Sonia Soni from AIIMS, New Delhi won second prize for her work on, Altered parahippocampal gyrus activation and its connectivity with resting-state network areas in Schizophrenia: A QEEG Study, Mr. Saket Prakash from Maulana Azad Medical College secured third place, working on, Comparative Evaluation of Outcome of Flexor Tendon Repair With or Without Amniotic Membrane Wrap. Six participants from this category were given award of appreciation for their new ideas and works. Similarly, for each category (oral presentation & poster presentation), rank were awarded to the participants for Young Researcher Award and Award of Appreciation was given to them by the chief jury & the organising committee members, for Life Sciences, AAYUSH, Medical Sciences, Innovative Ideas and Patents categories.

Finally, Dr. Praveen Kumar - Vice " President Society of Young Biomedical Scientists (SYBS) India gave vote of thanks and appreciated each participant for their valuable contribution to science and society and motivated them to work for a noble cause and serve humanity.

The, event ended with a high note and thus the society aims to organise such events in the future to promote the quality and excellence of science in the nation and see out more and more participation and vigour to work for science.
